SAS International supplied over 2,000m² of SAS330 metal ceilings incorporating a radiant chilled ceiling solution to Europe’s largest Audi showroom in West London.

Audi chose architects Wilkinson Eyre to undertake the project to build the new headquarters, completed in 2009. The SAS International radiant chilled ceilings were installed in the three showroom floors situated on the ground, mezzanine and first floors. The result is a modern, sleek and unobtrusive finish keeping the ceiling plane uncluttered to maintain maximum attention on the cars in the showroom.

Radiant chilled ceilings were chosen to provide comfort cooling to the showroom areas. As a retail environment, the use of room comfort products, such as radiant chilled ceilings, help to create an inviting and comfortable atmosphere for the ultimate shopping experience. Minimal maintenance is required for radiant chilled ceilings which is essential in a retail environment as it can reduce downtime.

Sebastien Ricard, Associate Director at Wilkinson Eyre Architects comments; “The showroom at the West London Audi Building is a dynamic double-height space, minimalist in its palette of colours and materials. The SAS metal ceiling system used follows the same minimalist design logic – flush with an integrated chilled panel system, tapered tiles follow the form of the space and the ceiling creating a beautifully flat and light surface allowing energy efficient cooling. This is complemented by the use of suspended up lighters which bathe the surfaces with light, emphasising its curved form and maximising the feeling of space”.

The SAS International SAS330, which features extensively in the car showroom, is a lay-in style system that provides functionality and outstanding performance. System 330 offers the facility to design the ceiling to any building grid size. For this particular project SAS trapezoidal and rectangle shaped metal tiles were manufactured and supplied to meet project requirements.

SAS330 incorporates the Radiant Chilled Ceiling element in the rear of the tile which results in a flush finish. Metal offers an inert and inherently hard-wearing surface, making metal ceiling systems both hygienic and a low-maintenance option over the course of their life-span which is perfect for this retail environment.

The project consolidates the Audi brand’s position as one of the global leaders in prestige car manufacturing, embodying Audi’s progressive image and its association with design and engineering excellence. The three showroom floors, fitted with the SAS chilled ceilings, are capable of displaying up to 116 cars and two basement levels housing a 32-bay workshop and extensive parking facilities. The top two storeys are given over to the Audi Quattro rooms – a business and creative complex which operates as a conference centre.
