Renovation retains heritage and advances sustainability

Australia’s ‘Money Box’ building is a superb example of how opting to renovate rather than rebuild can still achieve highly sustainable, premium-grade office space.

Originally owned by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the multi-award winning 5 Martin Place has undergone an urban revitalisation. The high profile redevelopment is a part refurbishment, part new build project featuring a new glass structure added to the existing site.

The evolving character of the listed heritage building now focuses on wellbeing to cater for its current high profile clientele. The site’s rich history has been rigorously maintained, and in conjunction with the new commercial addition, surpasses sustainability standards.

Main Contractor Grocon worked with SAS International due to our ability to meet challenging programme, product performance and design requirements. 25,000mof SAS330 is installed throughout the 19 office floors and amenity areas for its ability to integrate with passive chilled beams.

Architect Johnson Pilton Walker (JPW) originally considered expanded mesh tiles for their aesthetic properties. On this project there was a specific mix of performance requirements that mesh could not fully satisfy. Consulting SAS, we manufactured new tooling within our factories developing a bespoke perforation pattern to achieve both performance and aethetic demands. The specified oval pitch perforation pattern (diagonal pitch 20x5mm holes) with its 57% open area offers improved performance levels over the required minimum 40%.

5 Martin Place has already won a series of highly acclaimed architectural awards, and continues to be nominated in the region.
