Located on the South Bank of the river Thames, Transport for London has delivered two new eagerly awaited tube stations.
Nine Elms Station and Battersea Station will service the new residential quarter, the recently completed US Embassy, and the iconic Battersea Power Station, which has undergone its own transformational refurbishment.
Designed to welcome thousands of residents, tourists, and commuters every week, Battersea will now connect the new mixed-use development to greater London and the wider UK. In 2016, SAS International were invited by lead designers Mott MacDonald and Grimshaw to work on the design and specification of architectural metal finishes to the station. This has led to SAS ceilings, wall linings, acoustic cladding, louvres, and glazing being installed throughout Battersea Station.
“The collaborative relationship forged between Grimshaw, Mott Macdonald, SAS International and Ferrovial Construction Laing O’Rourke was critical to the successful delivery of the cladding and ceiling systems for the Northern Line Extension...
...Without that collaboration, we would have not been able to deliver the high standards of quality required for a world-class underground station.” – Dale Fincham, Architect, Grimshaw
As visitors enter the main concourse below ground level, SAS International’s brushed stainless-steel wall cladding provides a contemporary yet robust finish. The cladding is designed to be functional and houses ticket machines, help points, and emergency equipment. At high level, the stainless-steel cladding is perforated to provide acoustic mitigation and allow Public Address and Voice Alarm systems (PAVA) to function clearly.
A first for SAS, the design team also aided the integration of, London-based Brazilian artist, Alexandre da Cunha’s permanent artwork. A kinetic installation of two 100m long friezes, ‘Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset’ uses a rotating billboard to gently revolve through bright colour palettes suggesting ‘daily cycles’.
Once through the ticket barriers, gold anodised SAS750 tubeline frames the main space and guides passengers to the platform escalators. Functionality is also designed into the system to allow for lighting, services, and signage. Using bespoke swing-down hatches, portions of the ceiling are accessible to allow for inspection and maintenance.
On the platform, the language of brushed stainless steel and tubular ceilings continues the modern aesthetic. In addition, dark, acoustic cladding to the trackside tunnel wall lining provides additional acoustics and supresses the noise of incoming and exiting trains. Completing the package, SAS International also provided down-stands and steel frames for safety glass and, the iconic, Johnston 100 font platform signage. With quality, safety and efficiency at the forefront, SAS partnered with the Ferrovial Construction and Laing O’Rourke (FLO JV) to ensure perfect delivery was achieved throughout the new station.
“This fantastic project is a demonstration of the craftmanship and expertise of the SAS International Special Projects division, where our experienced specialists support the total process from design and manufacturing to supply and project management. The strength and durability of metal is demonstrated in this new landmark. SAS International’s capability and knowledge of delivering complex infrastructure projects has resulted in an outstanding installation of specialist metalwork and acoustic products.” - Gert van Doormalen, CEO, SAS International
SAS International are delighted that their design, manufacture and project management ability was called on by the design and construction team. The successful completion and launch of Battersea Station allows SAS to add another world-class station to their growing portfolio of UK and international transport projects.
